The chicken came before the egg according to authors of the following article:
Freeman CL, Harding JH, Quigley D, Rodger PM. Structural control of crystal nuclei by an eggshell protein. Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2010 Jul 12;49(30):5135-5137.
The authors indicate that the formation of eggs is only possible due to the protein ovocledidin-17 (OC-17), found in the chicken’s ovaries. The protein acts as a catalyst to speed up the development of the eggshell.
