what is an affordable powerful superconductor?
I need to use a superconductor in my science fair project and was wondering if there are any better than: yttrium barium copper oxide. I need one thats not too expensive, I can find, and can be sufficiently cooled using liquid nitrogen.

I think “powerful” won’t enter into it – you’re almost certainly stuck with “cheapest obtainable stuff that goes superconducting at liquid nitro temperatures”. You’ll probably have a hard time doing better than yttrium barium copper.

LikeDislikeFine silver is the best conductor at “room” temperature. Fine silver cooled with liquid nitrogen should be as close to a super-conductor as you wil find outside of liquid-helium cooled materials. I do not know how much you need – but silver is not all that expensive and is very easily handled.

LikeDislikeDepends on what you want to use it for. There are inexpensive kits available to demonstrate the levitation of a permanent magnet by a superconductor. The kit is a small disk of YBaCuO, size of a quarter, and a smaller NdFeB magnet, the size of a BB. Place the magnet on the disk in a shallow pan, bottom of a styrofoam cups works fine, then LN2 makes the YBaCuO superconducting and the magnet levitates. google superconducting magnet levitation and you might find someone who sells such things. good luck
